Home Improvement 101

Home improvement

Home improvement is a general term that describes any renovation, remodeling or upgrade to a home or property. It can also include repairs and maintenance services such as painting or resurfacing of a driveway or sidewalk. In some states, a home improvement contractor may be required to provide a contract that specifies the scope of the work, a payment schedule and whether the contractor will need to obtain any permits for the work. In addition, contractors may be required to provide details about their company such as licensing and insurance coverage.

It is important to remember that not all home improvements are created equal. While an updated kitchen or bathroom will likely increase your home’s resale value, other projects such as installing a pool or a new patio will not. Before undertaking any major home improvement, talk with a real estate agent about what features are most attractive to buyers in your area.

It is also a good idea to stay within your budget. Going into debt to finance home improvement projects is a recipe for disaster, both financially and emotionally. Paying cash for your project will give you peace of mind and save you a lot of money in interest charges. Be sure to factor in any unforeseen costs, such as extra materials or labor. And always make sure that the work is done by a licensed and insured contractor. This will protect you from unscrupulous contractors who may try to take advantage of you by cutting corners on the quality of workmanship.
