Home Improvement 101

Home improvement

Home improvement is the process of renovating or improving a home. The term is most often applied to changes made to the exterior of a home, but it can also refer to renovations of the interior. Home improvement is a popular pastime for homeowners and can be an effective way to increase the value of a home.

There are many ways to improve your home, but not all projects are created equal. Some home improvements can actually decrease your property value. Before making any major home improvements, make sure you consult a professional to ensure you’re making the best decision for your home.

During the housing boom after World War II, government mortgage insurance programs for veterans helped families move into suburbia. Large builders like Levitt and Sons dominated suburban construction, leading to a massive increase in the number of homes across the country. In addition, a growing middle class and availability of cheap loans and credit helped fuel the market for home improvement.

In the current economy, many people are deciding to stay put rather than relocate and are investing in home improvements instead. Some projects increase the resale value of a home while others just add comfort and convenience. A few low cost and high value projects include re-grouting tile, painting rooms and power washing the exterior of your home.

When choosing a contractor for your home improvement, always perform background checks and get referrals from friends and family members. It’s important to choose a licensed, reputable contractor that is insured. All contracts for home improvement work must be written and signed by the homeowner and contractor before any work begins or payment is made. Additionally, all contractors must be licensed by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC).
