The word entertainment has come to mean a great variety of activities, from the simple pleasures of an individual with a choice of personal entertainment options, to elaborate banquets or parties adapted for several; from dance and musical performances intended for a limited audience, to the huge range of television and film productions designed for mass audiences. Sometimes the activity has a serious purpose, as in ceremonies, festivals, or even acts of satire and cruelty.
The word derives from the Latin inter tenere, meaning “to hold inside.” The suffix -entertainment suggests that entertainment is meant to make people happy and feel good about themselves.
